Pooram commences in the Malayalam month of Meenam. In the Karkidakam Raasi of Makeeram Star (astrological zodiac of kerala), after the resonance of ritual fireworks, Pooram procession begins. In the following days, ‘ Erakkivachu pooja’ is done at Tantri homes and Arattu (special poojas and dipping idle in Temple pool by chanting various manthras) at prominent temples of the region. Arattupuzha is the splendid conjugation of 33 crore Devas (Gods) at the splendid Deva Mela (assembly of Gods). The head of this festivities is Thriprayar Thevar (Triprayar temple is one of the most ancient temples in kerala). In the ancient ritual of strengthening of the Guru and disciple bond, the Devis (Goddesses) and shasthakals (Maharishi) of Northern Kerala converge at Arattupuzha (Temple of Maharishi Vasishta, he was the ‘Guru’ of Sree Rama). On both sides of the procession of the Thevar, Cherpu Bhagavathi and Uragathu Amma (Two incarnation of Godess Mahalakshmi) welcome him accompanied by 71 ‘tuskers’ (Elephants wearing festival ornaments). Shaasthavu (Maharishi Vasishta) welcomes the guest with the accompaniment of 15 tuskers.

Panjarimelam is performed by 250 percussionists and drum musicians during Kootiezhunellippu. At midnight, the procession reaches Kaitha Valappu. Devi’s arattu begins at Mantharam Kadavu. On this occasion the presence of the ‘Ganga devi’ (Godess who washes all the human sins) is envisaged at the Mantharam Kadavu.

Arattupuzha pooram is an occasion that has been celebrated on this Earth without a break for more than 1430 years and it had started from around 3000BC. In addition to Devis and Devans, Yakshas, Kinnara and Ganhdarva presence is believed to be evident. When the Thevar proceeds to Mantharam Kadavu for aarattu, Shaasthavu who is the ‘Adhitheyan’ (hosts) is accompanied out of the temple. The Devi and Devan circumambulate the temple and perform ‘oocharam’. As the Thevar (Lord Sree Rama), Cherpu Bhagavathi and Uragathamma Thiruvadi proceed, Shaasthavu (Maharishi Vasishta) accompanies them for 7 paddy fields (The festival conduct in between hectares of paddy field). During the return of the Thevar the ‘Makudam’ which is the crown representing royalty is avoided.
